The global functional mushroom market was valued at more than $12bn in 2025 and is projected to reach $20.74bn by 2031, driven by surging consumer appetite for adaptogenic ingredients such as Reishi, Cordyceps and Lion's Mane.

But this rapid market growth is also exposing a critical supply chain vulnerability: adulteration.

Metabarcoding offers functional mushroom manufacturers a route to verified authenticityIndustry experts have long noted that supply volatility and price increases can lead to both unintentional product adulteration (as manufacturers switch suppliers) and economically motivated substitution from bad actors when prices spike.

The problem is compounded by the format of most mushroom supplements: substitution and adulteration are common in imported mushroom materials and in powdered or encapsulated form, visual verification is impossible.

Research by Alkemist Labs identified Lion's Mane and Reishi as among the nutraceuticals at the highest risk of adulteration and contamination, underscoring the scale of the challenge for brands sourcing these ingredients.

When species are substituted or diluted with cheaper plant material, products not only lose their intended bioactive properties but may trigger unwanted reactions in sensitive consumers. This is both a liability and a reputational risk.

German testing specialist lifeprint GmbH, part of the Tentamus Group, says that it has developed an accredited metabarcoding method designed specifically to address this gap.
